Milan: when it makes sense, and when it does not

The awkward part first, again. Bologna to Milan on the Frecciarossa is a little over an hour, and for a meeting near Centrale or Porta Garibaldi the train is the right choice. We are not going to sell you the opposite.

The car makes sense when something the train cannot do matters:

• Several stops in one day. Three appointments in three different parts of Milan, with the car waiting in between.
• Hours outside the timetable. Departures before six, returns after the last useful train.
• Groups and luggage. The price is per vehicle: for four people, with samples or suitcases, the comparison changes.
• Privacy. Not wanting to discuss business in a crowded coach is a legitimate reason.

Malpensa: here the car almost always wins

The typical case: a long-haul flight leaving Malpensa at half past seven in the morning. Check-in wants three hours, so you have to be at the airport by half past four. At that hour, from Bologna, there is no train that gets you there in time: you have to sleep in Milan the night before and still reach the airport somehow.

By car you leave home around one in the morning and reach the terminal with no changes, no hotel night and no luggage moved three times. It is not a cheap route, but set against a hotel night plus a Milan transfer the gap narrows — and for anyone flying far, jet lag starts being paid for right there.

Arrivals work the same way: we track the flight, waiting starts from the actual landing, and the driver is in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name. For Linate and Bergamo Orio al Serio just ask: they are off the price list but we quote the route.

The journey, and Milan’s regulated zones

Bologna to Milan runs on the A1 across the plain: two and a quarter hours in normal traffic, three at peak times on the ring roads. Malpensa adds the western bypass and the A8: a good three and a half hours in all, down to three at night.

Milan has two regulated traffic zones, Area C in the centre and Area B across most of the municipality. That is not your problem: you give us the address, we arrive at the address, and every access charge is already inside the agreed fare. No surprises weeks later.

What it costs

A fixed fare agreed before departure, covering fuel, tolls, parking and VAT, and quoted per car.
